Grade 8 Geography: Migration Report!

Hello Miss Song’s Grade 8 class!

Today we talked about migration: Immigration (coming into the country), and emigration (leaving the country). We learned that for every emigration, there is a reason. People leave their country in search for safety, job security, a new start in life, or anything else that would PUSH them out of their country (push factors). Then we learned that for every immigration, there are reasons for the people to go into a new country. People may go into a particular country in search for a better lifestyle or anything else that would PULL them into the new country (pull factors). Throughout the week, ask your parents, grandparents or aunts and uncles if they were ever once immigrants or emigrants. How did your family end up living in Canada? When did it all start? What are some of the Push and Pull factors that were in play when they decided to move? If you cannot find any help from a guardian or a family member, list some Push or Pull factors that would influence your decision on moving into or out of a country. What is most important for you when making such decisions?

Dear Parents and Guardians, this assignment is purposed to help students understand the realistic implications of people having t make the decision on moving to a new country and leaving their home country. The assignment is meant to help students understand how their own family got to be where they are today, and helps students broaden their perspective when it comes to worldwide struggles and/or conflicts that existed many years ago, or even today.
