Media Literacy: Purpose and Audience Part 2

Hello Miss Song’s Grade 8 class!

Great job on analyzing the Old Spice commercial and sharing with the class the different techniques and methods used. Everyone contributed so much to our discussion and I was very happy to hear a review from each and every single one of you. Props!

Your next assignment is this: find an advertisement for a product of your choice (must be appropriate to share with the class; no drugs, weapons, sex, or alcohol related advertisements allowed!). Then you will analyze the target audience for the advertisement. Discuss how you know who the target audience is, and whether or not it is effective. Please follow the link to the type of advertisement you are doing for the specific instructions.

Dear Parents and Guardians, please feel free to join in on analyzing the audience for advertisements with your children! This activity is purposed to help students be critical of the advertisements that they are bombarded with on a daily basis from the moment they wake up to the moment they go to bed. This assignments ask students to think about how the creators of the advertisements are trying to reach them or their target audiences by using specific strategies and techniques. It helps students to become more familiar with and conscious towards the persuasion that is present in advertisements.

Grade 8 Geography: Migration Report!

Hello Miss Song’s Grade 8 class!

Today we talked about migration: Immigration (coming into the country), and emigration (leaving the country). We learned that for every emigration, there is a reason. People leave their country in search for safety, job security, a new start in life, or anything else that would PUSH them out of their country (push factors). Then we learned that for every immigration, there are reasons for the people to go into a new country. People may go into a particular country in search for a better lifestyle or anything else that would PULL them into the new country (pull factors). Throughout the week, ask your parents, grandparents or aunts and uncles if they were ever once immigrants or emigrants. How did your family end up living in Canada? When did it all start? What are some of the Push and Pull factors that were in play when they decided to move? If you cannot find any help from a guardian or a family member, list some Push or Pull factors that would influence your decision on moving into or out of a country. What is most important for you when making such decisions?

If you need another copy of the handout given out in class, Click Here to obtain a copy.

Dear Parents and Guardians, this assignment is purposed to help students understand the realistic implications of people having t make the decision on moving to a new country and leaving their home country. The assignment is meant to help students understand how their own family got to be where they are today, and helps students broaden their perspective when it comes to worldwide struggles and/or conflicts that existed many years ago, or even today.

What is a Compound Word?

Hello grade 8s!

Yesterday we've reviewed and discussed the importance of proper compound words and I've created a comic strip to review what compound words are. Please read it over and think of some compound words on your own!

Don't forget to sign in with your IDs and join the classroom! Also feel free to edit/change your avatar! :)
